The
first of its kind in Phuket, and Thailand, Banyan
Tree Spa Academy opened in May 2001 with the primary
objective of training competent therapists to
meet the demands of the Spa's rapid worldwide
expansion. Tasked with ensuring the high level
of consistency and quality synonymous with the
Banyan Tree Spa experience, the Academy trains
a team of over 200 spa therapists, who undergo
more than 300 hours of rigorous theoretical and
practical training.
With Banyan Tree Spa setting up more new establishments
swiftly, the Academy supports actively by spotting
international trends, training professional spa
therapists and carrying out research and development
for new treatments, recipes, techniques and products,
to help maintain its leadership position in the
spa industry. Something we believed that the Spa
Academy has already succeeded, as it was accredited
by Thailand's Ministry of Education in May 2002.
Quite an achievement for an in-house institution. |

Training
Philosophy
Based on the knowledge and expertise it has accumulated
over the years in handling some of the most exclusive
international clientele, Banyan Tree Spa has developed
its own signature techniques, treatment recipes
as well as training philosophy. This unique school
of thought has been formalized in a proprietary
syllabus now being imparted to its trainee therapists.
Handpicked from the various provinces of Thailand,
each trainee therapist undertakes demanding theoretical
and practical training before she can be attached
to one of the Banyan Tree Spas and allowed to
assist a senior therapist in performing a spa
treatment.
The training program encompasses all areas of
spa therapy, including knowledge of the human
anatomy and important pressure points, modern
and traditional massage techniques, variation
of body weight for different techniques, knowledge
of skin epidermis and facial applications, properties
of different herbs and spices, preparation of
spa ingredients, and setting up of treatment rooms
and spa pavilions. |

Apart
from being taught the necessary skills to perform
the massage therapies, body treatments and facials
highlighted in Banyan Tree Spa's extensive menu,
the trainees are also oriented in the history
and philosophy of Banyan Tree Spa. Product knowledge
for its exclusive range of massage oils, essential
oils and incense fragrances, which are formulated
by a certified chemist in Thailand and produced
using natural ingredients like honey from the
mountains of North Thailand, are transferred by
way of a training manual.
The Spa Academy also nurtures an herb garden for
students, where spa ingredients like Kaffir Lime,
Ginger, Galangal, Lemongrass, Pandan and Wild
Pepper are grown and experimented. Although Banyan
Tree Spa therapists are trained in modern techniques,
they also rely on the wisdom passed on to each
generation. They have the natural talent of knowing
how to make curative ointments from plants and
how to apply them. |

However,
special emphasis is still placed on the Spa's
service concept, and trainees learn how to deliver
the Banyan Tree experience with finesse and sensitivity
from their seniors and trainers. Their innate
grace, attentiveness to detail and instinctive
sensitivity to guests' needs are what set these
highly skilled therapists apart from others. |
