London,
September 15 1998 ~ Banyan Tree Phuket
has been named the world's best spa resort in
the 1998 Readers Travel Awards of Condé
Nast Traveller magazine. The resort received the
award here today in ceremonies at the Victoria
and Albert Museum.
The resort, which features the Banyan Tree Spa
- Asia's first and largest "non-clinical"
garden spa was opened just four years ago. Already
it has won the BEST RESORT HOTEL award from the
Pacific Area Travel Association [PATA] two years
in a row, the British Airways' Tourism for Tomorrow
award for environmental conservation in a resort
development and it has also been named as one
of the top resorts in Asia by Business Traveller
Asia-Pacific magazine's Travel Awards Poll.
More than 26,000 readers took part in the poll,
voting Banyan Tree Phuket into the top spot based
on its service excellence, fine quality of spa
treatments and facilities, most luxurious villas,
sensitivity to the environment, wide range of
healthy foods and comfortably delightful ambience.
"This award is an important milestone for
us," said Mr Edwin Yeow, Joint Managing Director
of Marketing & Sales for the Banyan Tree Hotels
& Resorts. "The UK and European travellers
are extremely discerning and they expect the best.
This award is a great endorsement of our resort
and its services."
The latest win came hot on the heels of the release
of the latest occupancy figures for Banyan Tree
Phuket. Although social and economic uncertainty
in the Asian region this year have prompted a
downward trend in the luxury travel market, Banyan
Tree Phuket has continued to produce enviable
monthly occupancy figures.
"The key to our success is a total absence
of complacency," said Mr Yeow. "We have
been provided with a wonderful product and blessed
with an idyllic location, but we are permanently
striving to improve our product and services in
a luxury resort market that is probably the most
competitive in the world."
Banyan Tree Phuket offers 108 luxuriously appointed
villas surrounded by lush tropical gardens and
Asian Watercourts. Each villa has its own private
garden, Thai sala or sundeck, open-air sunken
bathtub with 80 villas having their own swimming
pool or jacuzzi. Guests have a choice of staying
at the Garden Villa, Jacuzzi Villa, Pool Villa,
Lagoon Pool Villa and two-bedroom Pool Villa.
Singapore-based Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts,
a subsidiary of the Wah Chang Group, is operated
under its investment arm, Tropical Resorts Ltd.
The company's corporate mission is to develop
and manage upscale luxury resorts steeped in Asian
tradition and environmental sensitivity. There
are two other Banyan Tree resorts: Banyan Tree
Bintan and Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru. A
fourth property will open in Seychelles by the
year 2002.
