Shanghai,
China, 7 February 2003 -Drawing
inspiration from the ancient Chinese tradition
of healing, the new Banyan Tree Spa Shanghai presents
the first Five-Element spa in the world, with
luxurious spa treatments rooted in the time-honoured
Five Elements Theory and created from over 73
Chinese herbs and natural ingredients.
Guests stepping into the 1,000-square-meter spa
located on the third level of Westin Shanghai
will be mesmerised by the opulence of the 13 spa
chambers, particularly the Five-Element Rooms
and the grand Yin Yang Deluxe Suite. Designed
by Architrave Design & Planning, a sister
company of Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, each
of the Five-Element Rooms is a vivid reflection
of Earth, Gold, Water, Wood and Fire.
EARTH ROOM
Synonymous with late summer, Earth symbolises
a state of equilibrium – a season that evokes
contentment, wholeness, and a sense of well-being.
Adorned with the riches of Mother Nature, this
room symbolise a balance between heaven and earth.
Dragon Vines creep forth from polished black pebbles
contrasted with slated sandstone while glass vases
filled with seasonal plants represent growth.
The earthy colours exude warmth and relax the
senses, creating a soothing effect.
GOLD ROOM
Synonymous with autumn, Gold signifies a time
of ridding the baggage of life – a season
of purification, retrospection and meditation.
Showcasing metallic artefacts like exotic Tibetan
Trumpets, Chinese Swords and Opium Pipes (also
known as “Black Gold”), this room
radiates opulence and brilliance. A specially
commissioned hand-carved Chinese calligraphy of
the character “Gold” sits majestically
in the centre of the room, greeting guests with
its commanding presence. Feature panels embellished
with gold leaves give a smooth metallic finish
that characterises the essence of Gold.
WATER ROOM
Synonymous with winter, Water signifies a time
for conserving energy – a season of rest,
relaxation and stillness.
Cool and tranquil – this is the inspiration
behind the design of the Water Room. Decked with
frosted green tiles that represent ice, the room
emanates a quiet calm and tranquillity associated
with the element. Horizontal niches holding glass
bowls filled with water and flowers are accentuated
by the curving waves of light, mimicking the fluidity
of Water. A Lotus Pond, made from copper and set
in black polished granite, is backlit by frosted
glass mirroring the reflective nature of Water.
WOOD ROOM
Synonymous with spring, Wood symbolises the beginning
of life – a season of growth, renewal and
freedom of expression.
The strong rhythmic layout accentuated by the
calm and gentle lighting makes this room the most
elegant. Horizontal stretches of striated dark
timber strips are rhythmically juxtaposed with
subtly lit niches of natural bamboo hand-carved
with Chinese idioms. Large green bamboos shooting
skywards from pebbled floor symbolise growth and
renewal.
FIRE ROOM
Synonymous with summer, Fire symbolises an abundance
of energy – a season of love, compassion,
joy, generosity and openness.
Hammered copper surfaces line the walls of the
Fire Room, emitting the vibrancy and dynamism
of the Fire element. Grey slate-clad columns illuminated
with a crimson glow resemble magma from volcanic
lava while a captive candle flame floating within
a tall glass vase shows how the Fire element can
be tamed. The alternating niches of natural light
from the flickering flame provide a warm and undeniably
alluring aura.
YIN YANG DELUXE SUITE
Yin and Yang symbolise the complementary opposites
of nature that flow in perfect harmony.
Bold and starkly contrasting, the Yin Yang Deluxe
Room focuses on symmetry and polarity, using black
and white to represent the respective primal forces
of Yin and Yang. A dramatic copper Lotus Pond
set against the soft, filtered light of the frosted
wall is contrasted with black and white marble
tiles. A spectacular circular Moon Gate separates
the relaxation lounge from the spa treatment area.
The balance between duality is evident in the
twinning of spa beds with the Moon Gate and Lotus
Pond. Clearly the most sophisticated of all rooms,
the Yin Yang Deluxe Room is a display of grandeur
blended with modernity and tradition.
